I followed a referral link that my old comic pinged me about and discovered this really delightful blog called Reading In Skirts. It’s a joint fashion blog between Mia and Tia as they document their adventures into putting together outfits from thrift stores and their own craftiness. Oh my gosh, their clothes and poses were so cute I had to sketch a few.
I drew from these posts: Outfit Post 12/13/11 and EBEW: Sequins, Outfit Post: 12/12/11 and EBEW: Sequins + Sparkles, Outfit Post: 12/2/11, and Team Outfit Pictures: 11/28/11
The last month or so I can feel that my artwork is trying to push on to the next level, but it’s so frustrating to not know what that’s supposed to look like or how to get there. When I try to just doodle from my imagination, I hate every line I put down and the entire process is 100% unpleasant– but when I can sketch from photos of actual people, the critical, self-hating part of my brain switches off and I can just enjoy the process of drawing. My brain feels free to experiment and play. The pose and personality has already been nailed down ahead of time, so I can just focus on making lines.
I like to think that I’m able to take the lessons I learn from these referenced sketches and then apply them to my drawings I invent on my own. But even if not, at least these are fun to do.
