Queer Comic Prints!

By popular demand, I’ve made prints of my Queer comic available! They are two feet long because that is the smallest I could make them and still keep ‘em legible.

These giclée prints are 8.5″ x 24″ on 50lb heavy matte paper that is velvet-y to the touch.

Because it is two (TWO!!) feet long, it ships rolled in a sturdy tube that should be able to withstand even the most ruthless postal worker.

Lookit the size of this! It’s, like, the length of my torso and neck! Anyway, I’m only offering this for a limited time. How long is the limited time? Man, I don’t know, until I have a new print I want to replace it with. Because that’s just how this fickle bitch rolls. ::Flips down sunglasses, somersaults away::

Europe: Part Four (Jeg Lag)

(This is part of my series of recaps about traveling to England and France this year from October 25 – November 8th)

Matthew and I traveled without any sleep for pretty much an entire day (Departed Portland October 25th at 3:30pm, arrived in London on October 26th at 12pm) and then we had to stay awake the whole day so that we could force our sleep schedules to realign to our new time zone, set eight hours ahead of Portland.

Whenever we go back to visit Matthew’s family, he always makes a point to repair as many things around the house as he can. This time around, he had this to work with:

Notice that the left lid’s knob is not like the other’s. That’s because it got left in the oven and melted to that flat disk you see now. Due to its new transformation, it was nearly impossible to extract the bottom screw holding the top bit in place, so nobody’s been able to fix it.

Well, ol’ Matt got to work and with a lot of patience and persistence, finally managed to undo the screw and replace the knob wiiiiiiiith…..

This delightful wine stopper cork thing that he screwed in through the bottom.

Ta-dah!

He is so handy.

And then finally we got to go to sleep.

Queer (French Version)

I’m so excited that I can finally share my new comic with you guys! It’s called Queer and you can read it in French over at Projet 17 mai. Many, many thanks to Dwam for correcting my original (hilariously bad) translation and turning it into something readable in French.

May 17th, 1990 is the day L’Organisation Mondial de la Santé (World Health Organisation) struck homosexuality from its books as a mental illness, turning May 17th into an international day of remembrance and a day to fight homophobia and transphobia.

Projet 17 mai contacted me several months ago about creating a comic on the theme of homophobia, and though it is definitely something I’ve experienced (being denied service, having people throw garbage, being followed by howling gangs of men, etc. just for holding my girlfriend’s hand), I actually have been more hurt and upset by the biphobia I’ve experienced from the LGBT “community” for falling in love with and marrying a cisgender man. Even bisexuals have been needlessly mean because I feel the term “queer” is a better fit for me instead of “bi” (it’s totally cool if “bisexual” is the term that works for you!! It’s just not the one for me).

As I say in the comic, it’s been disappointing to learn that being intolerant is a trait shared by both straights and gays. Meeting so many other bi/pansexual and homosexual-with-an-exception people who have also experienced this rejection and bullying from the queer community has been really helpful to me. We’re not alone, but damn if it doesn’t hurt like a bitch.

If you can read French, go ahead on read the whole comic, or wait another couple days for me to get the English version uploaded here on my site.

#IsawU

A while ago, Brendan Adkins did this ingenious creative writing project on his Twitter account called #IsawU, in which he wrote out fake personals ads that doubled as 140 character short stories.

I was so delighted by them that I wheedled him into letting me turn them into an illustrated 16 page mini-comic! And by mini, I do mean mini. 2.75″ x 4.25″, to be exact!

You can get a copy this weekend at Table B-8 during the Stumptown Comics Fest!

Europe: Part Seven (Going To Paris!)

(This is part of my series of recaps about traveling to England and France this year from October 25 – November 8th)

After a week of catching up with Matt’s family in England, we were off to spend the next week in FRANCE!

Oh my goodness, it’s hard to express how much France means to me. I visited once as a teenager and then again in 2005 when I lived in Aix-en-Provence for six months and then traveled the country for another month.

It was a truly life-changing experience.

My artwork blossomed, my mind expanded, my heart grieved and processed the relationship surrounding my first True Love, my concepts of identity vastly shifted, and I met the man I’d someday marry.

Though I swore to myself I’d return as soon as I finished my senior year of college, well, life happened (You know how it goes) so it took me seven whole years to finally come back.

Honestly, after spending so many years longing to return, when the prospect of doing just that finally presented itself, I was left feeling a little… terrified. My French is so rusty! What would I actually DO over there? I’ve fallen out of contact with all my old French friends from my original stay! How can I return to a place that was so powerful and defining to me as a 21-year-old now that I’m a completely different 28-year-old person? I DON’T DESERVE TO GO BACK.

But Matt told me I was being silly and we showed up at the Rail Europe train station on time.

Sketch of Matt reading his book while we waited for our train.

The train station waiting room.

Matt drew me in blue pencil and then I inked on top of his lines with my brush pen.

Me, at our waiting room table.

Europe: Part Three (The Drive Home)

(This is part of my series of recaps about traveling to England and France this year from October 25 – November 8th)

After traveling through the night and across the ocean without any sleep, we finally arrived in London! However, that was not the end of our travels, because we still had to drive (Well, thankfully Matthew’s father did the driving) the two more hours to get to Matthew’s mother’s home in Kent.

It wasn’t until we started the drive (on the left side of the road, which will always be disorienting to me, no matter how many times I visit England) that our sleepless travel finally caught up with me.
